President Donald Trump is anticipated to unveil on Wednesday a blueprint whereby South Korea would channel approximately $54 billion into an initiative to export natural gas from Alaska—a proposition long championed by Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, who finds himself embroiled in a fiercely contested reelection bid in that state.
The investment would constitute the second occasion this week on which the Republican president has endeavored to underscore the promise of foreign investment rendered attainable by his administration’s trade policy in states where Republican Senate candidates find themselves embroiled in closely contested electoral campaigns.
He issued a comparable pronouncement on Monday in the Oval Office concerning a colossal steel plant in Iowa.
The Alaska investment derives from pledges undertaken pursuant to a 2025 trade accord with South Korea, which encompassed commitments of $350 billion in U.S. investments in return for reduced U.S. tariffs on South Korean automobiles, auto parts and other goods.
The announcement, initially brought to light by Bloomberg, was confirmed by the White House on Wednesday.
Sullivan — a two-term senator who has been an indefatigable champion of the Alaska natural gas project and a vocal proponent of South Korean investment — now confronts a formidable electoral challenge from Democrat Mary Peltola, a former congresswoman.
The project comprises an 807-mile (1,300-kilometer) natural gas pipeline linking Alaska’s North Slope to a liquefied natural gas export terminal in southern Alaska and will ultimately curtail energy costs for the state’s residents by furnishing a dependable and secure supply, the White House said.
On Monday, Trump unveiled plans for a $15 billion steel plant slated for construction in Iowa, to be undertaken by a Minnesota-based company owned by an Indian industrial conglomerate.
In Iowa, Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson finds herself embroiled in a tightly contested U.S. Senate race against Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek, contending for the seat that is to be vacated by the retiring two-term Republican Joni Ernst.
Hinson delivered remarks in the Oval Office amid the announcement.
Alaska and Iowa—states where Trump prevailed by comfortable margins in every presidential contest he has entered—number among those in which Democrats are setting their sights on Republican-held Senate seats in the 2026 midterm elections, now less than five weeks distant.
To wrest the majority from the Republicans, Democrats must secure a net gain of four seats within the 100-member Senate.

Trump’s pronouncements coincide with mounting voter anxiety over near-record fuel prices stemming from the unresolved conflict with Iran, and with congressional Republicans—holding a majority—confronting an electorate disenchanted by Trump’s stewardship of the economy.
In a late-July poll conducted by the Reporters-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, a mere one-third of Americans sanctioned Trump's stewardship of the economy, whilst approximately seven in ten characterised it as poor.
