In the US, shops sold less in May, with sales going down by 0.9%. This happened after a small drop in April, as reported by the Commerce Department. The main reason was that fewer people bought cars. Many people bought cars in March to avoid new taxes on imported cars. Even though people feel less confident, stable prices and many jobs could mean people will still spend a normal amount of money in the next few months. If you don't include petrol, cars, and restaurants, sales went up a little last month. This shows that people are still buying some things they don't really need. While many types of shops sold much less, online shops, clothes shops, and furniture shops sold more. The drop in sales might be because people are worried that prices will be higher due to new taxes.
