Important people from the U.S. and China have agreed to start their trade talks again. The talks almost stopped because of some problems, but now they will continue. Both countries have said this.
The announcement happened after two days of talks in London. These talks finished late on Tuesday.
The meetings were about solving problems with selling minerals and technology. These problems had made a recent trade agreement weak. We don't know if they made progress on the main differences, like China selling much more to the US than it buys.
First, we had to get rid of the bad feelings. Now we can go ahead, Howard Lutnick from the U.S. Commerce Department told reporters after the meetings.
Stocks in Asia went up on Wednesday because they heard about the agreement.
The talks happened after President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping talked on the phone last week. They wanted to make things better.
Li Chenggang, a Chinese official, said that China and the other country have agreed on a plan. This plan will help them do what they talked about earlier on the phone and in Geneva, according to Xinhua News Agency.
We don't have more information right now, like if they will talk again later.
Li and Wang Wentao, who is China's trade minister, were with Vice Premier He Lifeng's group. They met with Lutnick, Scott Bessent from the Treasury, and Jamieson Greer, who works in trade. They met at Lancaster House, which is a very old house near Buckingham Palace.
Wendy Cutler, who used to be a U.S. trade negotiator, said that 30 out of 90 days were wasted because of arguments, and they still need to solve their problems.
The countries agreed to stop most of the very high taxes they put on each other for 90 days. This was because of a trade war that made people worried about the economy. Also, the World Bank said that the economy in the US and the world will not grow as much this year because of these trade problems.
Cutler, who works at the Asia Society Policy Institute, said that the U.S. and China wasted important time to fix their agreements. He also said they only have two months left to talk about problems like unfair trade, making too many products, sending goods through other countries, and the drug fentanyl.
After their meeting in Geneva, the U.S. and China have argued about advanced computer chips for AI, visas for Chinese students, and important minerals for cars and other businesses.
China makes a lot of rare earths. They might let more rare earths be sent to other countries soon. China wants the U.S. to stop blocking their access to technology for making advanced computer chips.
Lutnick said that fixing the rare earths problem is a very important part of their plan. He also said that the U.S. will stop doing some things it started because of this problem, but he did not say what they were.
He said that if they approve the licenses, our exports will probably go down.
Cutler said it would be very strange for the U.S. to discuss its export rules. She said China has been complaining about these rules for almost 20 years, and they are a problem.
She said that because of this, the U.S. has allowed China to ask to include export rules in future discussions.
On Tuesday, a court in Washington said the government can keep collecting special taxes that Trump put on goods from China and other countries. They will do this while the government tries to change a decision about Trump's trade rules.
Trump said he wants to sell more American products in China, because China makes a lot of things.
Trump said at the White House, "If we don't work with China, maybe we won't do anything. But we want to work with China."
