Paris police imposed an overnight curfew on Monday in two areas of the capital.
The move aims to prevent more violence after a weekend of serious rioting across France.
The unrest targeted city halls, other public buildings and thousands of businesses.
The curfew covers Place de la République, where rioting took place on Saturday.
It also covers the Les Halles shopping district, which saw looting.
It runs from 11 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Gatherings and demonstrations are banned from 8 p.m.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu had earlier called for "very limited" and "localized" curfews.
In northern France, local authorities imposed overnight curfews for people under 18 in several cities.
These include Lille, starting Monday for two days.
Nice also imposed an overnight curfew for minors from 9 p.m.
Lecornu defended the police response.
He said that despite serious violence and extensive damage, no one was killed.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez offered his resignation on Sunday, but President Emmanuel Macron refused it.
Macron's office said the refusal showed the need for continued command of law enforcement.
Macron also asked Nuñez to ensure full transparency about failures in planning and intelligence-gathering.
He called for new policing tactics on the ground as quickly as possible.
Nuñez said he resigned because he was responsible for what was happening.
He also admitted that authorities had "lost control" in some major cities on Saturday.
The violence followed nationwide protests on Saturday against rising living costs and poor conditions in schools.
At least 2,400 people were arrested.
Authorities estimated that at least 3,000 businesses were damaged or looted.
In Limoges, flames engulfed the 19th-century City Hall and caused its roof to collapse.
Jordan Bardella, president of the far-right National Rally party, said the government had failed in its duty to protect the French people.
