NATO’s top military commander said the alliance is “ready to fight tonight” if it is attacked.
U.S. General Alexus Grynkewich spoke Monday at the Warsaw Security Forum in Poland.
He said he does not believe a conflict is coming soon or cannot be avoided.
He also said the best way to keep peace is to prepare for war and keep talking.
Grynkewich said NATO would block any first Russian attack.
If the attack continued, NATO would weaken it and stop any advance, he said.
If needed, NATO would break the enemy’s forces and the systems that support them.
He gave no details on what kind of attack NATO expects, or where.
European officials have warned that Russia could test NATO with secret attacks or a small operation.
Recent incidents include an arson attack on an Estonian defense company.
There was also a failed plot against a Ukrainian aircraft at a German airport.
Denmark’s defense intelligence service said there is a “low but growing risk” of a limited Russian attack.
This risk applies to NATO countries that border Russia.
Grynkewich said NATO does not want war but is unlikely to be caught by surprise.
He said allies must coordinate a “coherent” response.
They must also make clear where their red lines are.
He said the response to Russian sabotage should be more support for Ukraine.
His spokesperson said NATO nations are deploying more sensors and technology to detect and counter drones.
