A suspected plot to attack a U.S.-run military air base in England was “almost certainly” directed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Monday.
Burnham has previously asserted that there exist compelling indications of Iran's involvement in the apparent plot last month to assault RAF Fairford air base, which has served as a staging ground for American bombers conducting strikes against Iran in the ongoing conflict.
In the course of the investigation into the alleged plot, seven men have been apprehended by police; nevertheless, all of the suspects have since been released on bail, and, to date, no charges have been brought against anyone.
Iran has repudiated any involvement, notwithstanding its prior assertion that it regards any base employed to launch attacks upon its territory as a legitimate target.
"I can affirm our assessment that this was in all likelihood coordinated within Iran, and almost certainly orchestrated under the aegis of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard," Burnham informed lawmakers.
"We shall not countenance such threats upon our soil."
On Sept. 27, throngs of residents in the vicinity of the air base were compelled to flee their dwellings as armed police personnel and army bomb-disposal specialists inundated the rural expanse.
Police subsequently disclosed that they had recovered a quantity of an accelerant — gasoline — from three vans connected to the initial five suspects apprehended at the scene, though no explosives were discovered.
Every suspect apprehended is in their twenties.
Although none has been formally identified, police disclosed that six are British nationals, whilst one holds dual U.K.-Iranian citizenship.
On Monday, the British government summoned the Iranian ambassador, who, reiterating that Tehran had no hand in the suspected plot, exhorted the United Kingdom to furnish evidence substantiating its allegations.
The U.K. further announced the addition of two Iranians to its sanctions list, among them the head of counterespionage operations within the Revolutionary Guard.
Authorities asserted that both individuals were implicated in conducting espionage and orchestrating attacks on behalf of Iran’s government across Europe and the U.S.
The Pentagon disclosed that the U.S. had withdrawn its bombers last week from RAF Fairford—situated approximately 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of London—and that the aircraft have since been redeployed to their home bases.
The Trump administration has asserted its conviction that the base confronted Iranian threats aimed at killing as many American troops and destroying as many U.S. planes as possible.
The British government granted the U.S. military permission to utilise RAF Fairford for what it characterised as defensive strikes targeting Iranian missiles and their launch sites, in the wake of Iranian attacks upon U.K. interests and Britain's allies in the Gulf.
Officials have asserted that local proxies with ties to Iran perpetrated a spate of arson and other attacks across the United States, Britain and elsewhere, many of them directed at Jewish communities and calculated to instil fear.
British officials have stated that the incidence of national security cases involving activity by hostile states, Iran among them, rose by 50% in the six months to December 2025.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood observed on Monday that the incident at the Fairford air base “speaks to a wider trend.”
“States such as Iran are deploying proxies to perpetrate hostile activity here on British soil.
They remunerate criminals or exploit credulous volunteers, assailing our nation and its citizens whilst sustaining a veneer of plausible deniability,” she said.
In a joint statement issued Monday, the foreign ministers of the U.K., the U.S. and roughly two dozen Western nations excoriated Iranian attacks upon their territory.
They asserted that the Fairford incident laid bare Iran’s “continued willingness to project hostile activity beyond its borders through covert networks and proxy actors.”
“Whosoever engages in hostile activities on behalf of Iran, or of any other state, ought to be apprised that we shall take measures to identify, investigate, disrupt, and prosecute such acts,” the statement said.
