A U.S. official said Tuesday that Chevron is expected to soon announce it will expand operations in Venezuela.

The official briefed reporters on the expected announcement.

They said Chevron officials and Energy Secretary Chris Wright are expected to visit Venezuela on Wednesday.

The new investment will be formally unveiled during the visit.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity under rules set by the White House.

Chevron is the second-largest U.S. oil company.

It is the only one with a major presence in Venezuela.

The announcement follows the White House's confirmation on Monday that it is partnering with North American Blue Energy Partners.

This is part of President Donald Trump's push to tap into Venezuela's oil industry.
