On Monday, Thailand started to control its land borders, stopping tourists from going into Cambodia, because both countries are reacting to a disagreement about their border.
After a fight on May 28, where a Cambodian soldier died in a small area that both countries claim, their relationship has gotten worse. Even though they agreed to calm things down, both sides are still taking actions or making threats that keep the situation tense.
On Monday, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated that Thailand will increase checks at its land borders and stop tourists from leaving. Only students, people who need medical care, and those buying necessary items will be allowed to enter or leave Thailand.
She said the new rules were meant to stop people from going to Cambodia's profitable casinos, but it looked like all tourists would be stopped.
On Monday, the Thai army stated that they had put new rules in place at all land border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia in five provinces. They are only allowing people with urgent needs to cross the border.
Because of a border disagreement, Cambodia has stopped using some Thai internet services and has also blocked electricity and fuel from Thailand. Before this, Cambodia got 30% of its gasoline and other fuel from Thailand.
Paetongtarn also said on Monday that Thailand will consider stopping exports that could help scam operations in Cambodia. She added that they will work with other countries and international groups to stop cybercrime in Southeast Asia.
Earlier this year, Thailand took steps to stop online scams in neighboring Myanmar. They did this by cutting off electricity, internet, and gas to the border towns where these scams were happening.
A UN report in April said that Cambodia is a center for online scam operations. In these operations, workers trick people using fake romantic relationships, false investment chances, and illegal gambling.
Paetongtarn has faced criticism for her mild approach to Cambodia, particularly from right-wing nationalists who have always been against her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Last week, a phone call between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen, who is Cambodia's Senate President and was prime minister for forty years, was leaked. This caused a lot of anger and led to demands for Paetongtarn to resign.
Critics said she tried to please Hun Sen, who was a long-time friend of her father. They also believed that calling a Thai army commander "an opponent" made Thailand seem weak. Because of this, several nationalist groups are planning a protest this week to ask for her resignation.
