After 12 days of fighting, Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday. This agreement aimed to end the conflict in the Middle East. It happened after Iran launched a missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar. Both countries accepted the deal after Iran fired a final missile attack at Israel, which killed at least five people early on Tuesday. Before dawn, Israel responded by carrying out many airstrikes on various locations in Iran.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had agreed to a ceasefire with Iran, with the help of the US. He told Israel's security cabinet on Monday that they had achieved all their goals in the 12-day operation against Iran. These goals included removing the threat of Iran's nuclear and missile programs. Netanyahu also stated that Israel had weakened Iran's military leaders and damaged several government buildings, and had taken control of Tehran's airspace. He warned that Israel would react strongly if the ceasefire was broken.
Israel launched strong attacks on Iranian cities until almost 4 a.m. After that, Iran fired many missiles, causing people in Israel to quickly go to bomb shelters as the sun rose. Israel's Magen David Adom rescue services reported that at least five people died and eight were hurt. Iranian missiles killed five people in Israel. Police stated that Iran's attacks damaged at least three apartment buildings in Beersheba. Emergency teams found five bodies in one building and are still looking for more. At least 20 people were injured. Outside, burnt cars were on the streets, and broken glass and rubble covered the area. Hundreds of emergency workers gathered to search for anyone else stuck in the buildings. Police said some people were injured even inside their strong safe rooms. These rooms are made to protect against rockets, but not against direct hits from large missiles.
A major city in southern Israel was hit just before Trump announced a ceasefire. Trump said that Israel and Iran had agreed to a "complete and total ceasefire" after Iran launched a small missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar. This attack was Iran's response to the U.S. bombing its nuclear sites. Iran had warned the U.S. beforehand, and no one was injured. On Truth Social, Trump stated that the ceasefire, which would begin around midnight Washington time, would "officially end" the war. Trump named this conflict the "12 Day War." This name reminds people of the "Six Day War" in 1967, when Israel fought against several Arab countries such as Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Trump's words are very significant to the Arab world, especially Palestinians.
In the 1967 war, Israel took control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Israel later gave the Sinai back to Egypt, but it still controls the other areas. A senior White House official, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that Trump talked directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to get the ceasefire. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff talked to the Iranians using direct and indirect ways. The White House says that the Saturday bombing helped persuade the Israelis to agree to the ceasefire, and the Qatari government helped to arrange the deal. It is not clear what role Iran's leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had in the talks. He had said before on social media that he would not give up.
Due to Iran's missile attacks, officials had to close the country's airspace for essential flights for several hours. According to Israeli news, some planes had to fly in circles over the Mediterranean Sea. Even though Israel's airports have been closed since the war with Iran began, a few emergency flights recently started to arrive and depart. By early Tuesday, Qatar Airways resumed its flights after Qatar closed its airspace because of the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base. Flight tracking data showed commercial planes were flying in Qatari airspace again, which indicated that Doha believed the threat to the country had passed.
Many people have died in the conflict. In Israel, at least 29 people have been killed and over 1,000 injured. Israeli attacks on Iran have also killed at least 974 people and injured 3,458 others, according to Human Rights Activists. This group has provided detailed numbers of people hurt or killed in past unrest in Iran. They stated that among those who died, 387 were civilians and 268 were security forces. The U.S. has helped about 250 American citizens and their close family members leave Israel using government and private flights that started recently. It is believed that around 700,000 American citizens, many of whom are also Israeli citizens, are currently in Israel.
