On Monday, Thailand started to control its land borders, preventing tourists from entering Cambodia, because both countries are responding to their continuing border disagreement.
The relationship between the two countries has become worse after a fight on May 28th. A Cambodian soldier died in this fight, which happened in a small area that both countries claim. Although both sides have agreed to make the situation less tense, they are still taking actions or threatening to, which keeps the tension high.
On Monday, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced that Thailand will increase checks at its land borders and stop tourists from leaving. She said that only students, people who need medical treatment, and those buying important goods would be allowed to enter or leave Thailand.
She stated that the new rules were intended to stop people from going to Cambodia's profitable casinos, but it seemed that all tourists would be stopped.
On Monday, the Thai army stated that they had put new rules in place at all land border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia in five provinces. They are now stopping everyone from crossing, except for those who have a very important reason to travel.
Cambodia has stopped using some Thai internet services and blocked electricity and fuel from Thailand because of a disagreement about their border. Before this, Cambodia got 30% of its gasoline and other fuel from Thailand.
On Monday, Paetongtarn said that Thailand is thinking about stopping exports that could help scam operations in Cambodia. They will also work with other countries and international groups to stop cybercrime in Southeast Asia.
Earlier this year, Thailand took action to stop online scams in Myanmar. They did this by cutting off electricity, internet, and gas to border towns where these scams were happening.
A UN report in April said that Cambodia is a main place for online scam operations. In these operations, workers trick people using fake romantic stories, false investment chances, and illegal gambling.
Paetongtarn has been criticized for her mild attitude towards Cambodia, especially by right-wing nationalists who have always been against her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Last week, a leaked phone call between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen, who is the Cambodian Senate President and former prime minister, caused a lot of anger and led to calls for Paetongtarn to resign.
Critics stated that she tried to please Hun Sen, who is a long-time friend of her father. They also mentioned that calling a Thai army commander in the disputed border area "an opponent" made Thailand appear weak. As a result, several nationalist groups are planning a protest this week to demand Paetongtarn's resignation.
