After 12 days of fighting that caused problems in the Middle East, Israel and Iran agreed on Tuesday to stop fighting. This agreement was proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. It happened after Iran attacked a U.S. military base in Qatar with missiles. Also, early on Tuesday, Iran fired more missiles at Israel, killing at least five people. In response, Israel launched many air attacks on different places in Iran before sunrise.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel and Iran had agreed to stop fighting, with the help of Trump. Netanyahu told Israel's security cabinet on Monday evening that Israel had reached all its goals in the 12-day operation against Iran. These goals included reducing the danger from Iran's nuclear and missile programs. Netanyahu also stated that Israel had weakened Iran's military leaders, damaged government buildings, and taken control of Tehran's airspace. He warned that Israel would react strongly if the agreement was broken.
Israeli attacks continued in Iranian cities until just before 4 a.m. Then, Iran launched many attacks, making Israelis quickly go into bomb shelters as the sun came up. Israel's Magen David Adom rescue services reported that at least five people died and eight were hurt. Iranian missiles caused these deaths in Israel. Police said that Iranian attacks damaged at least three crowded apartment buildings in Beersheba. Emergency teams found five bodies in one building and were looking for more. At least 20 people were injured. Outside, burned cars were on the streets, and broken glass and rubble covered the area. Hundreds of emergency workers gathered to look for anyone still stuck in the buildings. Police also said that some people were injured even inside their strong safe rooms. These rooms are made to protect against rockets but not direct hits from large missiles.
A major city in southern Israel was hit just before Trump announced a ceasefire. He stated that Israel and Iran had agreed to a "complete and total ceasefire." This announcement happened shortly after Iran launched a small missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar. Iran's attack was a response to the U.S. bombing of its nuclear sites. Iran had warned the U.S. beforehand, and no one was injured. On Truth Social, Trump said the ceasefire, starting around midnight Washington time, would officially end the war. He named this conflict the "12 Day War," which reminds people of the "Six Day War" in 1967 between Israel and Arab countries. This name has a strong emotional impact, especially for Palestinians.
In the 1967 war, Israel took the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Israel later gave the Sinai back to Egypt, but it still controls the other areas. A senior White House official, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that Trump talked directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to get the ceasefire. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff talked to the Iranians in different ways. The White House thinks that the bombing on Saturday helped Israel agree to the ceasefire, and the Qatari government helped make the deal. It is not clear what part Iran's leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, played in the talks. He had said before on social media that he would not give up.
Officials said that Iran's missile attack made them close the country's airspace for emergency flights for several hours. Some planes had to fly in circles over the Mediterranean Sea, according to Israeli news. Israel's airports have been closed since the war with Iran started, but a few emergency flights have recently begun arriving and leaving. By early Tuesday, Qatar Airways started its flights again after Qatar closed its airspace because of the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base. Flight tracking information showed commercial planes flying in Qatari airspace again, which meant that Doha thought the danger to the rich nation was over.
The conflict in Israel has led to many deaths and injuries. In Israel, at least 29 people have died and over 1,000 have been hurt. Israeli attacks on Iran have killed at least 974 people and injured 3,458 others, according to Human Rights Activists, a group from Washington. This group has given detailed numbers for past events, like the protests in 2022 after Mahsa Amini's death. They stated that among those who died, 387 were civilians and 268 were security forces. The U.S. has helped about 250 American citizens and their close family members leave Israel. They used government, military, and private flights that began recently. It is thought that around 700,000 American citizens, many of whom are also Israeli citizens, are currently in Israel.
