An Air India plane crashed in a residential area of Ahmedabad, killing all 241 people on board and at least five medical students in a nearby college hostel. This was one of India's worst airline disasters in many decades. Only one person, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, survived because he was thrown from the plane before it exploded. The aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, was the first of its type to crash. Indian aviation authorities said that the aircraft sent out an emergency signal but did not answer further communication attempts.
