After a 12-day conflict that caused instability in the Middle East, Israel and Iran agreed on Tuesday to a ceasefire plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. This agreement followed a limited missile attack by Tehran on a U.S. military base in Qatar, a final missile attack from Iran targeting Israel that killed at least five people, and a series of Israeli airstrikes across Iran.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had reached a ceasefire agreement with Iran, in cooperation with the Trump administration. He reported to the security cabinet that Israel had accomplished all its aims during the twelve-day operation against Iran. These aims included eliminating the threat from Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, weakening Iran's military command, damaging several government locations, and taking control of Tehran's airspace. Netanyahu also stated that Israel would react strongly to any breach of the ceasefire.
Israeli attacks on Iranian cities continued until just before 4 a.m. These were followed by Iranian attacks that forced Israelis into bomb shelters as the sun came up. These attacks killed at least five people and injured eight others, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue services. Iranian missiles killed five people in Israel. Police reported that Iran’s attacks damaged at least three crowded residential buildings in Beersheba. Emergency workers found five bodies in one building and are still looking for more. At least 20 people were hurt. Outside, burned-out cars were scattered on the streets, and broken glass and rubble covered the area. Hundreds of emergency workers gathered to search for anyone else trapped in the buildings. Police said some people were injured even inside their apartments’ reinforced safe rooms. These rooms are designed to protect against rockets and shrapnel but not direct hits from ballistic missiles.
Before Trump announced the ceasefire, a major city in southern Israel was directly hit. This happened after Iran attacked a U.S. base in Qatar with a few missiles, in response to America bombing Iran's nuclear sites. Trump then said on Truth Social that a "complete and total ceasefire" would start around midnight Washington time, officially ending the conflict. Trump called this conflict the "12 Day War." This name is important because it reminds people of the 1967 Middle East war, known as the "Six Day War," where Israel fought against several Arab countries. Trump's use of this name is very emotional, especially for the Arab world and Palestinians.
During the 1967 war, Israel took control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Although Israel later returned the Sinai to Egypt, it still controls the other territories. A senior White House official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that Trump communicated directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to secure the ceasefire. Meanwhile, Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff communicated with the Iranians through various channels. The White House claims that the Saturday bombing helped persuade the Israelis to agree to the ceasefire, and that the Qatari government helped to arrange the agreement. It is unclear what role Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's leader, played in the discussions, especially since he had previously stated on social media that he would not surrender.
After Iran's widespread missile and drone attacks, authorities had to close the country's airspace for several hours, allowing only necessary emergency flights. Israeli media reported that some planes had to fly in circles over the Mediterranean Sea. Even though Israeli airports had mostly been closed since the war with Iran started, a few emergency flights recently began arriving and leaving. By early Tuesday, Qatar Airways started its flights again after Qatar closed its airspace because of the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base. Flight-tracking information showed that commercial planes were flying in Qatari airspace once more, which suggested that Doha believed the danger to the energy-rich nation was over.
The conflict has caused many deaths and injuries. In Israel, at least 29 people have died and over 1,000 have been hurt. Israeli attacks on Iran have also reportedly killed at least 974 people and injured 3,458 others, according to Human Rights Activists, a group in Washington. This group, which has given detailed numbers of casualties from past unrest in Iran, like the protests after Mahsa Amini's death in 2022, said that among those killed, 387 were civilians and 268 were security personnel. The U.S. has evacuated about 250 American citizens and their immediate families from Israel using government, military, and private flights that began last weekend. It is thought that around 700,000 American citizens, many of whom also have Israeli citizenship, are currently in Israel.
