On Tuesday, the Palestinian Health Ministry reported that Palestinians in Gaza, who were trying to get essential aid, were shot at again. This incident led to the deaths of 36 people and injuries to 207 others.
Humanitarian organizations and experts argue that Israel's long military operation and ongoing blockade have caused a severe food crisis in Gaza, bringing the area very close to famine.
At least 163 people have been killed and 1,495 injured in several shootings near aid locations. These locations are managed by the Israeli and U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and are situated in military areas that independent media cannot enter. The Israeli military has admitted to firing warning shots before at people they considered to be approaching their forces in a suspicious way.
The foundation states that there has been no violence at the distribution points themselves. However, it has advised people to keep to the marked access routes and stopped deliveries last week to discuss with the military how to make things safer.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that there was "significant progress" on a possible ceasefire deal. This deal could also lead to the return of some of the 55 hostages still held in Gaza, but he added that it was "too early to be hopeful." Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also confirmed on Tuesday that there was progress in the ceasefire talks.
Nasser Hospital reports that at least eight individuals in southern Gaza lost their lives near Rafah, amidst efforts to secure humanitarian assistance.
According to Nader Garghoun, a spokesperson for al-Awda Hospital, two men and a child died in northern Gaza on Tuesday, and at least 130 people were injured. The hospital received those who were hurt, and most of them had gunshot wounds.
Witnesses reported that Israeli forces started shooting at about 2 a.m., a few hundred meters from the aid distribution point in central Gaza. Many Palestinians who urgently need food often go to these places hours before sunrise, hoping to avoid the large crowds.
The Israeli military reported that they fired warning shots at people they considered suspects. They claimed these individuals had moved close to their soldiers, hundreds of meters from the aid site, before it opened.
Mohammed Abu Hussein, a resident of the adjacent Bureij refugee camp, reported that Israeli drones and tanks initiated gunfire, and he witnessed five individuals sustaining gunshot wounds.
Abed Haniyah, another witness, stated that Israeli forces began shooting "without distinguishing" as thousands of people tried to get to the food distribution point.
He stated that daily life is filled with humiliation, and that people are killed every day simply trying to get food for their children.
Furthermore, the health ministry reported that an Israeli strike in Gaza City on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of three Palestinian paramedics.
According to the ministry, medical teams from the Health Ministry's emergency services were assisting people after an Israeli attack on a house in Jaffa Street, Gaza City. A second strike then hit the same building. The Israeli military did not comment on this specific incident. However, they stated that their air force had, over the past day, struck numerous targets connected to Hamas's military infrastructure, such as rocket launchers.
The U.N. has dismissed the novel aid system.
Israel and the United States state that the new food distribution system has been established to stop Hamas from taking humanitarian aid and using it to support their militant activities.
The United Nations, which has an established system to deliver aid throughout Gaza, reports that there is no strong evidence of widespread theft or misuse.
U.N. agencies and important aid groups have strongly opposed the new system. They argue that it goes against humanitarian principles because it allows Israel to control who gets aid and forces Palestinians to move to only three working locations.
The other two distribution centers are located in Rafah, a southern city that is now mostly empty because Israel has turned it into a military zone. Israeli forces keep a secure area around all three centers, so Palestinians have to go near them to get to the distribution points.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed creating a "sterile zone" in Rafah to remove Hamas and move all residents there. He has also mentioned that Israel would support what he calls the "voluntary emigration" of many of Gaza's two million Palestinians to other countries. However, most of the international community, including Palestinians, has rejected these ideas, considering them forced displacement.
Hamas began the conflict with its attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. During this attack, Palestinian militants killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 others hostage. Currently, 55 hostages are still being held, and it is believed that fewer than half of them are alive. Most of the other hostages were released through ceasefire agreements or other deals.
Gaza's Health Ministry reports that Israel's military actions have resulted in the deaths of nearly 55,000 Palestinians. The ministry indicates that most of those who died are women and children, but it does not separate civilians from fighters. Israel, on the other hand, claims to have killed more than 20,000 militants, but it has not provided any proof.
The conflict has severely damaged large parts of Gaza and caused about 90% of its people to be displaced, often more than once.
