In South Korea, a political party had problems. They first said Kim Moon Soo could not be their candidate for president, but then they changed their mind and said he could be. This happened just before the election in June.
On Saturday, the People Power Party changed their plan very quickly. They tried to replace their leader, Kim, but they could not. This showed that the party had problems with its leaders. This happened after the former president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was removed because he used martial law in December. This might make it hard for the party to win the next election.
Kim, who is very conservative and used to be a minister for work, became the candidate for president for the PPP party on May 3. He won more than half of the votes. He won against another candidate who was more modern and did not like Yoon's military rule. But the leaders of the PPP party, who support Yoon, tried very hard to make Kim stop and support Han instead. They thought Han could win more easily against Lee Jae-myung from the Democratic Party.
After Han and Kim could not agree on who should be the candidate, the party leaders made a very unusual decision on Saturday. They cancelled the first vote, removed Kim as the candidate, and chose Han to run for president instead. But, this change had to be approved by all party members in a phone vote, and they said no to the change on Saturday night.
The party spokesman, Shin Dong-wook, said they cannot tell the exact numbers. He said the vote to change the candidate did not pass by a small number of votes. Kim had said the party's plan to change him was a 'quick political action.' So, Kim is now the candidate again. The party said he will officially sign up for the election on Sunday.
"Now things will go back to how they should be," Kim said.
Kim is 73 years old. He was an important worker for unions in the 1970s and 80s. But in the 90s, he joined a conservative party. He said he stopped wanting to be a "revolutionist" when he saw that communist countries failed. After that, he was the leader of South Korea's Gyeonggi province for eight years. He was also in the National Assembly three times.
Han was president for a short time after Yoon was removed in December and April. He stopped being president in May to try to become president in the future. He said he should lead the country because he worked for the government for many years. He also said he could lead the country during difficult times in the world and with trade, partly because of what the American president Donald Trump did.
Han became the candidate and asked the party to be together. He said he respects what the party members said.
In recent polls, Han and Kim are not as popular as Lee. Lee is a leader for the Democrats and wants Yoon to leave. He laughed at the PPP party because they wanted to change their candidate. He told reporters, "I have heard of forced marriages, but I have never heard of forced unity."
