Two US officials said that next week, when President Donald Trump is in Saudi Arabia, he will say that the US will now call the Persian Gulf the Arabian Gulf or the Gulf of Arabia.
Arab countries want to change the name of the sea near Iran, but Iran says its history with the sea is very important.
Two government officials from the U.S. talked to The Associated Press on Tuesday. They did not want their names to be known. The White House and National Security Council did not answer questions right away.
People have called the water body the "Persian Gulf" for a long time, since the 1500s. But in some Middle Eastern countries, people often call it the "Arabian Gulf." The government of Iran, which used to be called Persia, was unhappy in 2012 because Google maps did not use any name for this water.
In the U.S., Google Maps shows the water as Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf). Apple Maps calls it the Persian Gulf.
For many years, the US military has only used the name "Arabian Gulf" instead of "Persian Gulf" in their public messages and pictures.
For some Iranians, the name of this sea is very important because of their country's history as the Persian Empire.
Iran's foreign minister said that people knew Trump would be friends with anyone who paid the most money, and now they know he will sell his country's land too.
On Wednesday, the foreign minister of Iran also spoke. He said the names of rivers and seas in the Middle East do not mean one country owns them. He said the names show that we should respect them together because they are important for everyone in the world.
Abbas Araghchi wrote on social media X that changing the old name of the Persian Gulf for political reasons shows unfriendly feelings towards Iran and its people, and he strongly disagrees with it.
Any quick decision about this won't be right or legal. It will only make Iranians everywhere, in Iran and other countries, very angry.
Trump can change the name in the U.S., but he cannot tell other countries what name to use.
The International Hydrographic Organization helps make sure maps of seas and oceans are the same everywhere, and it also gives names to some of them. Sometimes, different countries use different names for the same sea or place on their maps.
Trump will also visit Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, which are near the sea. This was his first trip outside the country as president. He wants these countries to put money into the U.S. and help with problems in the area, like the fighting in Gaza and Iran's plans for nuclear power.
The U.S. president still owns businesses that have important money connections to these countries, even while he is president.
This change happened months after Trump said the U.S. would call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.
Earlier this year, the Associated Press sued the Trump government. This was because the White House stopped their reporters from going to most events. The Associated Press did not follow the president's order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" in the United States.
A judge, who was chosen by President Trump, made a decision last month. He said that the AP news agency has the right to choose its own words. He also said that the government cannot get back at the AP for the words it uses. The judge ordered that the AP should be allowed to have access again.
