Two storms moved through the Pacific on Thursday.
Hurricane Polo brought heavy rain to Mexico’s west coast.
Tropical Storm Nolo headed toward Hawaii.
In Mexico, residents stacked sandbags and left their homes.
On Hawaii’s Big Island and Maui, people prepared for possible severe flooding.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Polo’s heavy rain could cause deadly flooding and landslides in Mexico.
In the port city of Lazaro Cardenas, seawater entered homes on Thursday.
Wooden planks and furniture were left scattered in the streets.
Polo has moved between Category 4 and 5.
Both are major-hurricane strength.
Its strongest winds were expected to stay offshore.
The center was passing near the coast.
Tropical Storm Nolo was gaining strength far off the southern tip of Hawaii’s Big Island.
Forecasters expected hurricane conditions to reach the state Friday night.
Rain could total more than 2 feet (60 centimeters) on islands.
These islands are still recovering from earlier storms.
Schools were closed for the rest of the week.
Maui could also face deadly floods and mudslides, the hurricane center said.
Mexican authorities opened shelters and cleared people from beaches.
They deployed 15,000 security personnel and suspended schools as a precaution.
They did not immediately say how many people had been evacuated.
Guerrero state was at particular risk of flooding and mudslides, the hurricane center said.
Local worry was shaped by past storms, including Hurricane Otis in 2023.
That storm plunged Acapulco into turmoil for weeks.
“So many people said it wouldn’t happen and then it did,” said Gonzalo Ramírez, a bartender in the city.
