Archbishop Timothy Broglio leads Catholic pastoral services for Catholics in the U.S. military.
He is speaking against the planned livestream of the firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan.
In a statement on Monday, Broglio also said Catholic soldiers on the U.S. Army firing squad should ask to be excused.
He said such duty goes against the teachings of the church.
Broglio joins other Catholic leaders who have spoken against the death penalty and the livestream plans.
Hasan is an Army psychiatrist.
He was convicted of killing 13 people in 2009 at Fort Hood in Texas.
He is set to be executed by firing squad on Dec. 3.
Broglio remembered that he led the funeral of Michael Grant Cahill.
Cahill was the only civilian killed in that attack.
Broglio asked if showing Hasan's execution to the public serves any purpose.
He said the crime was very bad.
Broglio also said the U.S. military generally has a good reputation in the world.
He asked if there is really value in putting the military in the same boat with terrorists.
He said this would happen by broadcasting the execution of a man in a wheelchair to the whole world.
