A Black woman was found hanged from a tree in Mississippi, an event that has evoked painful memories of the brutal history of lynching across the American South.

The body of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune was discovered on August 3 behind an abandoned house in Jackson, the state capital.

Jarques Ratliff, 51, who is also Black, pleaded not guilty to a murder charge on Monday.

Police and prosecutors have so far not suggested any suspected motive, and they have said they expect more arrests to follow.

Irrespective of the circumstances surrounding this case, for a great many Black people the imagery of rope and noose evokes the historical legacy of lynching and vigilante violence perpetrated against Black Americans, and in doing so gives rise to profound anguish and trauma.

"As Black people in the South in 2026, we are feeling and experiencing things that we felt in 1956 and 1966, and this should not be happening," Jackson activist Brad Franklin said of Fortune's death.

Yet precisely because this place is Mississippi, and precisely because our state's history of racism runs deep and long, our skin has long since been honed to an extraordinary toughness, sufficient to withstand its corrosion.

Fortune's mother, Christy Spivey, stated that she does not believe race had any bearing on her daughter's death.

Spivey is white.

She said Fortune's father is Black.

"I think it's something extremely private, extremely private," Spivey said, insisting that those involved were people acquainted with Fortune.

Over the past two years, roughly half a dozen Black women and men have been found hanged to death across the South.

In several of these cases, the police swiftly concluded that the deaths were suicidesa move that, when investigators rule out the possibility of homicide on the basis of only limited evidence, tends to provoke skepticism rooted in historical context.

"I advocate letting the evidence speak for itself," says Sean Joe, a professor of social work at Washington University in St. Louis and a nationally recognized authority on suicidal behavior among Black Americans.

"Yet if you ... intend to define or make pronouncements about suicide, then you must present some evidence to that effect."

Spivey asserted that she was utterly certain her daughter could not possibly have taken her own life.

"Absolutely not.

Even if she had managed to climb that tree, no, no, she would never, never, never have done it," Spivey said.

In February, police in Cobb County, Georgia, discovered the body of twenty-one-year-old Kyle Bassinga in a park.

Although investigators asserted that there were no indications of foul play, Bassinga's death "evokes for many the eras of slavery and Jim Crow," said Lisa Cupid, chair of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

In September 2025, Trey Reed, a Black student who was only 21 years old, died at Delta State University in Mississippi, and his death was ruled a suicide; in the same month of the following year, that is, September 2024, 39-year-old Dennoriss Richardson likewise met his end in a rural area of Colbert County, Alabama, and his death was similarly ruled a suicide.

Richardson's wife, Leigh, has stated that she does not believe her husband died by suicide; and, as has occurred in other cases, the family then commissioned an independent autopsywhich, according to news reports, concluded that his death was consistent with hanging.

Leigh Richardson told ABC News that although her husband suffered from chronic asthma and other respiratory conditions that would trigger his anxiety attacks, "that would never be the way he would consider leaving this world."

According to the Equal Justice Initiative, an organisation headquartered in Alabama, more than 4,400 lynchings were documented across the United States between the Reconstruction era and the Second World War.

In 1955, a teenager in Mississippi, Emmett Till, was brutally lynched after being accused of harassing a white woman, and this episode became the catalyst that galvanised the civil rights movement.

"These were public, deliberately public, and their purpose was to spread terrornot only against the individual and their family, but also against the entire community," said Karlos Hill, a professor of African and African American studies at the University of Oklahoma; Hill is the author of Beyond the Rope: The Impact of Lynching on Black Culture and Memory.

In September, nearly sixty members of Congress signed a joint letter to the Department of Justice, urging it to open investigations into cases in which Black people have been found hanged and to enforce the Emmett Till Antilynching Act enacted in 2022a law that explicitly designates lynching as a federal hate crime.

"At a time when anti-Blackness and white supremacy are running rampant, we must not stand idly by and allow strange fruit from Black bodies to hang from tree branches across the country," U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley said in a statement.

According to the office of Pressley, a Massachusetts Democrat and the principal drafter of the letter, the Department of Justice has acknowledged receipt of the letter but has so far issued no response.

Trent Thompson, a 58-year-old resident of Florence, Alabama, pointed out that the recent incidents of Black people being lynched and killed have prompted the Black community to begin discussing the death of Nolan Xavier Wells this summer.

On the Fourth of July, Wells, an eighteen-year-old Black youth, set out by boat with friends for an island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, yet he did not return with the others.

His remains were recovered two days later.

Thompson observed that, given the state's entrenched history of racist violence and the pervasive distrust of law enforcement, the scrutiny attending the investigation into this case had already intensifiedthereby compounding the Black community's misgivings about the many cases involving Black deaths.

"I know this body of mine through and through," he said.
