"As Black people in the South in 2026, we are feeling and experiencing things that we also felt in 1956 and 1966, and this should not be happening," Jackson activist Brad Franklin said, speaking about Fortune's death.

Yet it is precisely because we are in Mississippi, given this state's deep-seated history of racism, that our skin has long since been honed to an extraordinary toughness, tough enough to withstand it all.

In several of these cases, the police promptly classified them as suicidesa move that, when investigators rule out the possibility of homicide on the basis of limited evidence alone, tends, on the strength of historical experience, to invite skepticism.

"I advocate letting the evidence speak for itself," says Sean Joe, a professor of social work at Washington University in St. Louis and a nationally renowned authority on Black suicidal behavior.
