A man arraigned on a murder charge in connection with the hanging death of a Black woman in Mississippi entered a plea of not guilty on Monday, at his inaugural court appearance.

The cadaver of Tasia Fortune, aged 29, was discovered suspended from a tree at the rear of a derelict dwelling in Jackson, the state capital, on the third of August.

On Friday, law enforcement authorities took into custody Jarques Ratliff, aged 51 and likewise of Black heritage, charging him with murder, subsequent to the state medical examiner's determination that her demise constituted a homicide.

At Monday's brief Municipal Court hearing, a judge denied bond for Ratliff, who professed his innocence before the court.

Ratliff's attorney, present at the hearing, departed the courthouse without addressing reporters.

Law enforcement authorities and prosecuting attorneys have neither disclosed a suspected motive nor indicated whether they believe race was a contributing factor.

Police Chief RaShall Brackney disclosed on Friday that Ratliff, 51, had maintained an “association” with Fortune, yet she refrained from elaborating.

She further intimated that additional arrests are to be anticipated in connection with the case.

Prosecutors divulged scant novel particulars in court on Monday, albeit they asserted that Fortune had been hanged by means of a “black cable cord” and that Ratliff had endeavoured to conceal himself from officers within a vehicle on the day of his apprehension.

Brackney, along with the other police officials present at Ratliff’s Monday hearing, declined to comment thereafter.

A Kentucky native, Fortune was born to a Black father and a white mother, though she identified as Black, recounted Christy Spivey, the deceased woman's mother.

According to relatives, Fortune had been residing in Jackson for approximately a decade.

Spivey stated that Fortune had four children, adding that she seldom saw two of her grandchildren.

Spivey could not state with certainty where Fortune had been residing at the time of her death, yet she recounted that her daughter had contended with homelessness in recent years.

She related that Fortune had lately spoken of launching a cleaning business and had been endeavouring to set her life in order.

Two further hanging fatalities in Mississippi within the preceding year — those of a Black student at Delta State University and a homeless white man in Vicksburg — likewise garnered widespread scrutiny.

Both deaths were ruled suicides.
