Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a builder from Maryland, said he did not smuggle people in a court in Tennessee. His lawyers said the charges were wrong because he was sent to El Salvador by mistake in March. This happened after the highest court said he could come back. His lawyers said the people who spoke against him were not honest because they wanted help with their papers to stay in the country. The charges started when police stopped his car in 2022 in Tennessee. He had nine people in the car, and the police thought he was smuggling them. But they let him go with only a warning. Before the court meeting, the government said he was dangerous and might try to run away. They said he sold drugs and guns, and hurt women he drove. Because of these charges, Ben Schrader, who was a main lawyer, left his job.
