The 9th U.S. Court of Appeals has temporarily stopped a federal judge's order. This order told President Donald Trump to give control of the National Guard troops back to California. These troops were sent to Los Angeles because of protests about immigration raids. Before this, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer had decided that sending the troops was against the law. He said it broke the Tenth Amendment and was more than Trump's legal authority allowed. California Governor Gavin Newsom agreed with this decision. However, the White House said Breyer's order was "unprecedented" and an "abuse of power." This decision only affected the National Guard, not the Marines who were also being sent out. Newsom had sued to prevent the Guard from being sent, saying it would make things more tense and cause public disorder. The troops were sent under Title 10, which lets the president use the National Guard for federal duties in certain situations.
