The last person who was missing from a boat that overturned on Lake Tahoe in California was found on Monday. This means that eight people have now died.

A boat with ten people on board overturned on Saturday afternoon near D.L. Bliss State Park on Lake Tahoe. This happened because a sudden storm caused large waves, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.

Two people were quickly rescued and taken to a hospital, but their condition was not known. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said that six bodies were found later on Saturday, and a seventh body was found on Sunday evening. Divers looked in a part of Lake Tahoe and found the last body on Monday afternoon.

Sergeant Kyle Parker stated that the victims' names will not be public until their families have been informed.

There have been some accidental deaths in the lake recently, like drownings, but serious boating accidents with many deaths are not common. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department said in 2022 that about six people die in the lake each summer. However, in 2021, a record 15 people died. The department could not give updated numbers right away.

The thunderstorm was much stronger than even weather experts expected. Matthew Chyba, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Reno, Nevada, said they had predicted some rain, but not such a powerful storm. The storm hit the south side of the lake around 3 p.m. Winds reached over 35 mph (56 kph), and waves became taller than 8 feet (2.5 meters).

We didn't think it would be so strong, Chyba said.

He said temperatures in the area were much lower than normal for this time of year, which might have made the air unstable.

Chyba said the eight-foot waves on Lake Tahoe were "quite significant," and they were making the lake very rough.

Lake Tahoe is a well-known spot for summer fun, attracting people who enjoy boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding. This beautiful, but very cold, lake sits on the border between California and Nevada and is one of the deepest in the United States, only surpassed by Oregon’s Crater Lake.

Officials haven't shared any information about the people on the boat that sank, and they haven't said if the boat was rented or owned.

The storm on Saturday dissipated within approximately two hours.

Brittany Glick was on a rented pontoon boat with seven friends, celebrating a bachelorette party on Saturday, when the weather suddenly changed. Glick said on Monday that the day started sunny, but then the wind got stronger, the waves got bigger, the temperature dropped, and it became hard to see.

She said it felt like a tsunami was just starting, and she had never experienced anything like it before.

After about an hour of sailing through rougher and rougher water, the boat returned to the dock. The passengers were completely wet, and then it started to hail.

"Seeing the overturned boats was a shock," Glick explained. "Being soaked through and freezing cold, we couldn't stop shaking. Our feet went numb, and our toes started turning blue. It was definitely one of the most frightening experiences I've had in thirty years. The storm arrived so suddenly; it was truly terrifying."

KCRA-TV obtained a video showing boats tied up at a marina bumping into each other due to strong winds.
