The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has temporarily stopped a federal judge's order for President Donald Trump to give back control of National Guard troops to California. This happened after the troops were sent out because of protests about immigration raids in Los Angeles. Before this, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer had decided the deployment was illegal, going against the Tenth Amendment and beyond Trump's legal power. California Governor Gavin Newsom had praised the first ruling. However, the White House said Breyer's order was "unprecedented" and an "abuse of power." The ruling only applied to the National Guard, not to Marines who were also being sent out. Newsom had sued to stop the Guard's deployment, saying it would make tensions worse and cause civil unrest. The deployment was done under Title 10, which allows the president to call the National Guard into federal service under certain rules.
