A federal appeals court is likely to allow former President Donald Trump to maintain control over California National Guard troops, who were deployed to Los Angeles following protests concerning immigration raids. This decision would reverse a lower court's order for Trump to return control to Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who contended that Trump had exceeded his authority. The result of this case could significantly affect a president's power to deploy soldiers within U.S. cities. It is noteworthy because it marks the first instance since 1965 that a president has activated a state's National Guard without the governor's consent. The judges, two appointed by Trump and one by Biden, suggested that presidents have significant leeway under the federal law in question. However, they did not concur with the Justice Department lawyer's argument that courts could not review Trump’s decision. A ruling from the panel is expected shortly.
