For the first time, some parts of Alaska are now under a heat advisory. This new term, recently allowed by the National Weather Service, replaces "special weather statements." The change aims to better explain how serious and dangerous the weather is, rather than just indicating unusually high temperatures. The first advisory was issued for Fairbanks, where temperatures were predicted to go above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is uncommon for June. This change in terms is not about climate change, but it recognizes that hot weather does affect Alaska, especially in places without air conditioning. Currently, this advisory system is only permitted in Juneau and Fairbanks, but there are plans to expand it to Anchorage. However, despite the heat, temperatures in Anchorage have not yet reached the level needed for a heat advisory to be issued.
