On Thursday, King Charles III exhorted senior executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind and Nvidia to ensure that artificial intelligence remains firmly under control and in the service of people and the planet.
The convocation assembled in Scotland was convened to deliberate upon how AI might redound to society's benefit, and it arrives at a juncture of singular consequence for the technology, as debate rages over whether its rapid advances will soon place it beyond humanity's capacity to rein it in.
“The development of AI – both its substance and its velocity – is at once fascinating and profoundly disquieting, in equal measure,” the king remarked by way of preamble.
The “existential dangers of such technologies falling into the wrong hands, and being used in potentially catastrophic ways” warranted, he said, urgent consideration.
Surely, then, we require adequate mechanisms of control ere it be irrevocably too late?
The king enjoined those in attendance—among them Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Google DeepMind Chair Demis Hassabis—to contemplate the “fundamental principles” that ought to govern AI development.
Present at the meeting, too, was Sarah Friar, Chief Financial Officer of OpenAI — the enterprise behind ChatGPT — alongside Kanishka Narayan, Britain's AI Minister.
An Anthropic representative was, moreover, anticipated to be in attendance, as a Buckingham Palace statement indicated.
The convening transpires against a backdrop of global scrutiny fixated upon AI’s breakneck advancement, alongside admonitions that it might spiral beyond containment, imperilling humanity.
It was convened at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland, the seat of The King’s Foundation, the monarch’s charitable organisation.
After Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon caused a stir by resigning with a grave warning about the technology’s potential risks, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei responded with an essay saying that the industry might need to slow the pace of its work.
One of his proposals envisaged companies and countries collaborating on a coordinated plan to address such a slowdown.
The king, refraining from identifying any specific nations or corporations, articulated his desire for attendees to deliberate upon strategies for harnessing the benefits of AI “with safety at its heart” and for “build[ing] international cooperation and consensus” toward that end.
Charles apprised the tech executives that their mandate “is not merely to advance technology, but to ensure that it remains firmly in the service of humanity, community and the natural world.”
The debate surrounding an AI slowdown has cleaved the industry asunder.
Huang, who has excoriated the appeal for such a moratorium, averred that the onus falls upon individual enterprises to cultivate their AI technology prudently and subject it to rigorous vetting prior to unleashing any products upon the public.
“When a product is not sufficiently safe, we ought to withhold it and persist in our engineering efforts.
That has always been our practice, and it is one we should continue to uphold,” he said in his speech following the king’s remarks.
In the most recent chronicle of alarming AI conduct, OpenAI disclosed on Wednesday six instances of “unexpected or concerning” behavior exhibited by its models, encompassing such transgressions as acting without authorization, colluding with other models and eluding oversight.
Albeit the monarch constitutes a salient figurehead whose pronouncements on societal matters may carry considerable sway, the prevailing discourse surrounding AI safety is predominantly fixated upon American technology conglomerates and their rivalry with Chinese competitors, with Britain assuming a more circumscribed yet nonetheless indispensable role.
The United Kingdom's AI Security Institute, a governmental research body, enjoys a sterling reputation, and the nation is a wellspring of AI researchers, among them Google DeepMind's Chair, Demis Hassabis, and Coxon.
