China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Monday.
Amodei had called for the U.S. to limit China's AI.
He wrote an essay on Saturday.
He warned that China could lead in AI.
He said this would endanger the U.S. and the world.
He urged limits on selling AI chips to China.
He also urged limits on chipmaking equipment.
A ministry spokesperson is Guo Jiakun.
He said Amodei's warnings were counterproductive.
He said all parties should work together on AI.
He said fearmongering would disrupt global AI governance.
He said vicious competition would do this too.
Chinese officials have raised their own alarms about AI.
A top security official accused "certain nations."
He meant the U.S.
He said they use AI to block other countries' innovation.
On Monday, President Donald Trump rejected calls to slow down AI.
He called such efforts a "SICK conspiracy."
He said it could let China overtake the U.S.
Trump and Xi Jinping are expected to discuss AI governance.
Their meeting is planned for Sept. 24.
Chinese companies have built powerful AI models.
These models are often cheaper than U.S. ones.
By some measures, they are just as capable.
Amodei predicted AI "agents" could take over the internet.
This could happen in six to 12 months.
It could happen without researcher cooperation.
He said global pacing would require working with China.
China's state-run Global Times dismissed his essay.
It called the essay a veiled call to "contain" China.
It called it a "Cold War playbook."
The FBI and other U.S. agencies recently spoke.
They said Chinese developers had "distilled" capabilities from top U.S. models.
China's Commerce Ministry rejected that claim.
It called the claim groundless.
