The big company Nvidia is having trouble selling its H20 computer chips in the US because of new rules from the government.
On Tuesday, Nvidia said the U.S. government told them they need a special paper, called a license, to send their H20 computer chips to China. Nvidia said this license is needed forever because the U.S. government thinks the chips might be used in a very fast computer in China.
Nvidia expects to spend $5.5 billion by April 27. The company's stock price went down by about 6% after the market closed.
The H20 is a special computer chip that Nvidia can sell to China because of U.S. rules. Last week, people said that the head of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, might have stopped new rules about the H20 chip. This might have happened when he had dinner with President Donald Trump. People think he promised that Nvidia would build computer centers for AI in the U.S.
Maybe it was not a surprise, but Nvidia said on Monday they will spend a lot of money in the next four years to make some AI chips in the U.S. People who watch the industry said the company did not give many details.
Some people in the government wanted to stop China from buying a special computer chip. They thought China used this chip to make AI, which is like smart computer programs. This AI surprised people in the US in January.
Nvidia chose not to provide a statement.
