A person who used to deliver food admitted they worked with others to trick DoorDash. They made the company pay over $2.5 million for deliveries that never happened, according to officials.
Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri said he was guilty in court on Tuesday. He admitted to working with others to do wire fraud, said the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Devagiri, who is 30 years old and from Newport Beach, California, said he worked with three other people in 2020 and 2021 to cheat a delivery company in San Francisco, according to government lawyers.
The police said Devagiri used customer accounts to make big orders. Then, he used another worker's login to get into DoorDash's system. He changed the orders to go to drivers he and his friends controlled. These drivers said they delivered the orders, but they didn't. Devagiri changed DoorDash's system to pay these drivers for deliveries that never happened, the police said.
Devagiri used the DoorDash app to change the orders from "delivered" to "in process." Then, he gave the orders to drivers that he and others controlled, and started the process again, according to the prosecutors.
Prosecutors said that the employee, who is no longer working there, admitted to being part of a plan to commit fraud in November 2023 and said they were guilty.
Devagiri is the third person found guilty for his part in this plan. He could go to prison for 20 years and pay a fine of $250,000. He needs to go back to court on September 16.
