It looks like a new fight is starting between companies in the tech industry. Figma told TechCrunch that they sent a letter to the popular AI startup Lovable, telling them to stop what they are doing.
The request tells Lovable to stop calling their new product feature "Dev Mode." Figma also has a feature named "Dev Mode," and they got the trademark for this name last year from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Figma told TechCrunch that their trademark is only for the short name "Dev Mode," not the full name "developer mode." This is similar to trademarking the word "bug" when you mean "debugging."
Figma wants to protect this word, so they had to send a letter asking them to stop using it. Many people on X said the letter was very polite. If Figma doesn't protect this word, it might become a common word, and they could lose their trademark.
We need to see if Figma will make the situation worse. They also say they have other plans. On Tuesday, Figma said they secretly applied for an IPO. But if Figma sues, a legal fight in different countries could cost a lot of money for Lovable. Lovable is a new Swedish company that got 15 million dollars in funding in February.
Interestingly, Lovable is becoming popular for something called "vibe coding." This is when users describe what they want using words, and the product builds it with code. A few weeks ago, they added a "dev mode" so users can change the code.
So, this case is not just about a trademark problem. It also shows how a bigger company is careful about a startup that is causing trouble. Figma was worth about $12.5 billion around a year ago.
A Figma spokesperson seemed to agree. They told TechCrunch that Figma didn't warn companies like Microsoft about the word because their products are in a "different kind of products and services."
Last month, Figma's CEO, Dylan Field, talked with Garry Tan from Y Combinator. When they talked about coding products that could be a threat, Dylan Field said it wasn't a big deal.
Field said that even though people like vibe coding because it's fast, it's important to not just start quickly and make a prototype, but also be able to finish the final product. He explained that this is where design and code often don't connect well.
