There might be a new problem between tech companies. Figma sent a letter to another company, Lovable, telling them to stop doing something.
The letter says Lovable must stop using the name "Dev Mode" for a new part of their product. Figma also has a part called Dev Mode. Figma got the legal right to use this name last year. The U.S. Patent and Trademark office says this is true.
It's interesting that "dev mode" is a name often used in products for software programmers. It's like an edit mode. Big companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft have something called "developer mode" in their products like iOS, Chrome, and Xbox. People often call this "dev mode" in instructions and other writings.
People often use the name "dev mode". For example, Atlassian used it a long time before Figma. Many free software projects also use this name for a feature.
Figma told TechCrunch that their special name 'Dev Mode' is only for the short name. It is not for the full name 'developer mode'. It is like having a special name for 'bug' when you talk about fixing problems.
Because Figma wants to keep the word for itself, it has to send letters telling others to stop using it.
Some people online think this name is already common. They say it should not be a trademark, and Lovable should fight.
Anton Osika, who started the company Lovable, told TechCrunch that they will not change the name of the feature. He said they will not do it even if Figma asks them to.
We will see if Figma takes the issue further. Figma is also busy with other things. On Tuesday, Figma said they secretly gave papers to start selling parts of their company to people. But, if Figma goes to court, a legal fight in another country could cost a lot for the new Swedish company, Lovable. Lovable got 15 million dollars in February to start their business.
Also, Lovable is becoming popular for something called "vibe coding." This means you can write what you want, and the product makes it for you, including the computer code. A new feature called "dev mode" started a few weeks ago so people can change the code.
Lovable says it is like Figma but easier to use. It says designers can use Lovable without the hard work they do in programs like Figma. Many new companies are starting to use it.
This is not just a problem about a name. It is also a big company getting ready to compete with a small, new company. Figma was worth $12.5 billion about a year ago.
Someone from Figma almost agreed. They told TechCrunch that Figma did not send legal letters to companies like Microsoft about the word because their products are very different.
And Osika from Lovable is ready to fight back. He told TechCrunch that Figma should make their product good, not just do marketing. He also said that Lovable is getting customers from Figma and other old design tools.
Last month, Dylan Field, the head of Figma, spoke with Garry Tan. Dylan said he didn't think the danger from vibe coding products was a big issue.
Field said people like vibe coding because it is fast. But he said it is also important to help people finish their work, not just start it quickly. He said this problem is for design and also for code.
Osika also looks ready to fight. He showed the letter from Figma on X and used the smiling face emoji.
