Elon Musk said Tesla wants to start a robot taxi service in Austin, Texas, around June 22. But it might not happen for sure.
Musk wrote on X that the date might change. He said Tesla is very careful about safety.
Investors, Wall Street experts, and Tesla fans have been waiting for the driverless cars. Musk said they would start in Austin in June.
Last month, Musk said the taxis will be watched from far away at first. They will only go to safe parts of the city. He wants to start with about 10 taxis, then quickly add more. After that, he plans to offer the service in Los Angeles, San Antonio, San Francisco, and other cities.
Musk has said for ten years that his self-driving cars will be ready soon. Now, he needs to show it because Tesla is starting a taxi service with these cars. Tesla's car sales have dropped because there are more electric car companies, they are changing their popular Model Y car, and because Musk is now more involved in politics.
The launch in Austin happened after Musk and President Trump had a big argument about taxes. Some people are worried that Trump might try to cause problems for Musk. They think he might ask safety groups to check the robotaxis very carefully if there is any trouble.
