It seems like two tech companies, Figma and Lovable, are starting to have a problem. Figma sent a letter to Lovable and told them to stop doing something.
The letter tells Lovable to stop using the name "Dev Mode" for a new part of their product. Another company, Figma, uses the same name. Figma officially registered this name last year, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark office.
It's interesting that 'dev mode' is a name used a lot in programs for people who write software. It's like a way to change things. Programs from big companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft have features called 'developer mode' that people often call 'dev mode' when they talk about them.
Many people use the words "dev mode". For example, Atlassian used this name in their products a long time before Figma did. Also, many free software projects call a feature "dev mode".
Figma said to TechCrunch that their special name 'Dev Mode' is only for the short name, not the full name 'developer mode'. It's like saying the word 'bug' can only be used for 'debugging'.
Figma must send letters to stop people using the word, because they want it to be their special word. If they don't protect it, it could become a common word and they would not be able to stop others from using it.
Some people online think this word is too common and should not be a trademark. They think Lovable should try to stop it.
Anton Osika, who is the boss of Lovable, told TechCrunch that his company will not change the name of the feature because Figma asked them to.
We don't know if Figma will take legal action. Figma is also busy because they are planning to sell parts of their company to people. If Figma does take legal action, it might cost a lot of money for Lovable, which is a small company from Sweden. Lovable only got $15 million in February.
Also, Lovable is getting popular for something called "vibe coding." This is when you tell the computer what you want by writing it, and the computer makes it for you, even the code. They added a "dev mode" not long ago so people can change the code.
Lovable says it is better than Figma. On its website, it says designers can use Lovable easily, without difficult work like they do in Figma. Many new companies are now using Lovable.
This is not just a fight about a name. It is also a big company getting ready to fight a smaller, new company that is causing problems. Figma was worth $12.5 billion about a year ago.
Someone from Figma said something like this. They told TechCrunch that Figma did not send letters to companies like Microsoft about the name because their products are very different.
Lovable's Osika says Figma should make their product good and not just focus on selling it. He also says Lovable is getting customers from Figma and other old design tools.
Dylan Field, who started Figma, said last month that he didn't think these products were a big problem.
Field said people like to create things quickly with code. But he said they also need to be able to finish their projects. He said this is hard with code and with design.
Osika also seems ready to compete. He put the letter on X and used the smiling face.
