A person who used to deliver food admitted they worked with others to trick DoorDash and steal over $2.5 million. They did this by making the company pay for deliveries that never happened, according to government lawyers.
Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri said he was guilty in court on Tuesday. He admitted to working with others to commit wire fraud, said officials from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Devagiri, 30, from Newport Beach, California, said he worked with three other people in 2020 and 2021 to trick a delivery company in San Francisco, according to the government.
The police said Devagiri used customers' accounts to order expensive things. Then, he used a worker's password to get into DoorDash's system. He changed the orders to go to driver accounts that he and his friends controlled. These fake driver accounts said they delivered the orders, but they didn't. Devagiri changed DoorDash's system to pay these fake drivers for deliveries that never happened, the police said.
Devagiri used the DoorDash system to change orders from "delivered" back to "in process". Then, he gave the orders to drivers that he and others managed, and the process started again, according to the people investigating the case.
Prosecutors said that the employee, who is no longer working there, admitted they were part of a plan to commit fraud in November 2023 and pleaded guilty.
Devagiri is the third person found guilty for his part in this plan. He could go to prison for 20 years and pay a fine of $250,000. He needs to come back to court on Sept. 16.
