Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is anticipated to be sidelined for the remainder of the season owing to blood clots in his lungs, an individual with knowledge of the matter disclosed on Monday.
The individual, citing the sensitivity of a health matter, addressed reporters on condition of anonymity.
Hurts was placed on injured reserve Saturday, two days after the Eagles disclosed that he has a blood clot in his calf.
He sat out the first of at least four games in Philadelphia’s loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
The Eagles and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, disclosed further details regarding his condition on Monday.
They stated that Hurts has deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, signifying that a blood clot has migrated from the legs to the lungs.
His treatment entails the administration of anticoagulants, and he will be precluded from engaging in any football-related activities until such time as he has discontinued them.
The Eagles and Lynn stated that Hurts was anticipated to make a complete recovery.
"Clinically, he is stable and manifests no significant functional limitations," their statement said.
The Eagles had previously stated that Hurts sustained an injury when he took a cleat to his calf area on Oct. 4 in a game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Hurts apprised the medical staff of the injury following practice on Oct. 8.
The Super Bowl 59 MVP returned to practice the ensuing day, prior to the team's departure for London to face Jacksonville.
Specialists in London initially diagnosed Hurts with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis.
Since cementing his status as the full-time starter in 2021, Hurts had never been sidelined for more than two games in any single season.
He has propelled the Eagles to five consecutive playoff berths, three NFC East titles and two Super Bowl appearances, the latter encompassing a 40-22 triumph over the Chiefs two years ago.
Tanner McKee was installed as the starting quarterback in Hurts's stead for the encounter with the Panthers.
McKee completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles' 25-14 defeat at the hands of Carolina.
The Eagles (2-4) have now sustained four consecutive losses for the first time since 2020.
This season, Hurts has amassed 933 passing yards, eight touchdown passes and three interceptions.
He is midway through a five-year, $255 million extension — inclusive of $179.3 million guaranteed — that binds him to the team through the 2028 season.
The Eagles left fans utterly astonished when they selected Hurts out of Oklahoma in the second round of the 2020 draft.
They appeared to have Carson Wentz firmly entrenched at quarterback and to have more pressing needs elsewhere.
Yet Hurts supplanted Wentz and went on to establish himself among the NFL's elite quarterbacks.
