San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw incurred a one-game suspension after head-butting Seattle’s Ernest Jones IV, an act precipitated by a late hit along the Seahawks sideline.
The NFL levied the suspension on Monday, asserting that the headbutt of a player devoid of a helmet during Sunday’s 32-29 triumph over Seattle was “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”
Greenlaw will be absent from San Francisco’s game next Monday night against Washington, subject to the resolution of an appeal.
Greenlaw's career has been punctuated by a litany of infractions: he has been ejected on two further occasions, was embroiled in a sideline altercation with Dom DiSandro, Philadelphia's head of security, in 2023, and was similarly disqualified for a helmet-to-helmet hit on the Chargers' Justin Herbert in 2022.
Greenlaw likewise incurred a one-game suspension last season, during his tenure in Denver, for excoriating an official in the aftermath of a victory over the New York Giants.
Greenlaw was levied a fine of $11,941 for taunting the Broncos’ sideline in a win last week.
The most recent infraction transpired in the second quarter on Sunday, when Sam Darnold, having scrambled, was struck late by Greenlaw after crossing out of bounds — a transgression that yielded a personal foul in a game San Francisco ultimately won 32-29.
No sooner had the hit occurred than several Seahawks defenders accosted Greenlaw, whereupon he retaliated by head-butting Jones.
Jones was bleeding as a consequence of the hit, and Greenlaw was ejected.
“You’re going to get baited big time when, especially when you’re on their bench,” coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game.
“They told me that he had butted a guy without a helmet.
So if that’s exactly what happened, then yeah, we got to be a lot smarter than that.
Can’t do that.”
Having returned to San Francisco this season, following a stint with the Broncos in 2025, Greenlaw has amassed 37 tackles across five games.
