Japan has named Onosato as its new sumo grand champion, also known as yokozuna. He is the first Japanese wrestler to reach this important rank since 2017. In recent years, Mongolian wrestlers have mostly been the best in the sport. Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. The Japan Sumo Association promoted him to the top rank after he won the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. Onosato is from Ishikawa prefecture, an area that was badly damaged by a serious earthquake and tsunami in 2024. He has promised to use his new position to inspire and help the people in his home region. His promotion also sets up a competition with Hoshoryu, the other current yokozuna, who was born in Mongolia. They have a tournament scheduled for July in Nagoya.
