Paris Saint-Germain survived many attacks and showed great flexibility on Wednesday to beat a strong Arsenal team 2-1. This win helped them reach the Champions League final and gave them another chance to win the title they really want.
When they didn't have the ball as much as usual, PSG seemed unsure at first, but they used quick attacks and their goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, to win 3-1 overall.
PSG reached the final of Europe's main tournament for only the second time in their history. They were second five years ago. They did this in the first season after their star player, Kylian Mbappé, left to join Real Madrid.
Another very famous player did not fill the big space left by Mbappé. This was a big change for a club whose owners had spent a lot of money for over ten years to attract famous players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi, and Neymar.
The club's new methods helped coach Luis Enrique create a strong team that played some of the best football in Europe.
“I said from the start that our goal was to work hard enough to be able to make history, and that is still our goal,” Enrique said. “We want to be the first to win the trophy we have been waiting for for a long time. This project has changed since last year, and I feel good here as a coach because the president gives me the freedom and support to build the team we want. We are adapting to the market to create a team that improves every day.”
The French team will try again to win its first Champions League competition when it plays against Inter Milan on May 31 in Munich.
"We trust our coach and our players," said Nasser al-Khelaifi, the PSG president, to CBS Sports. "Our players are talented, young, and eager to succeed. They play with all their effort for the team, for the city, and for the club. That is what matters most."
With one fixture remaining, our task is far from complete.
Inter, who have won the European championship three times, beat Barcelona 7-6 over two games. Many people think this was one of the best semifinals in the competition's history.
PSG beat Aston Villa, Liverpool, and then Arsenal. Last year, they lost to Borussia Dortmund at this stage, and in the 2020 final, Bayern Munich beat them.
PSG scored the first goal in the 27th minute from a set piece. The Arsenal defense cleared a free kick, but the ball went to Fabian Ruiz near the penalty area. He then hit a great half-volley into the goal.
Achraf Hakimi scored a skillful goal in the 72nd minute, making the score 2-0, and then Bukayo Saka scored one goal for the Gunners.
Last week in London, Arsenal had a tough start. They couldn't handle how strong PSG's midfield was, and because of that, they lost the game 1-0.
With midfielder Thomas Partey back, Arsenal had 61 attacks, while PSG had 26.
The visiting team quickly showed they were better when Declan Rice jumped high but didn't score with his header, and Gabriel Martinelli's shot was stopped by Donnarumma.
Arsenal were much stronger than PSG on the sides of the field, and almost scored again in the eighth minute when Martin Ødegaard shot low from outside the box, and Donnarumma had to make another good save.
PSG had to wait for chances to attack quickly, and they didn't get many.
Finally, after 17 minutes, a chance appeared. On the left side, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia found some room, moved the ball to his right foot, and shot with great accuracy. His typical excellent shot hit the goalpost.
PSG did not take advantage of a bad pass from William Saliba. But Désiré Doué's shot went straight to Raya without much power.
Soon after 60 minutes, Arsenal had another excellent chance when Saka kicked a curved shot that looked like it would go into the top corner, but Donnarumma used his long body to push the ball away.
Vitinha missed a penalty after VAR decided Myles Lewis-Skelly had touched the ball with his hand. However, PSG soon scored a second goal when Hakimi shot the ball into the corner from substitute Ousmane Dembélé's pass.
Arsenal continued to attack until the end and reduced the difference in score with a goal from Saka in the 76th minute.
