Japan has named Onosato as its new sumo grand champion, called a yokozuna. He is the first Japanese wrestler to reach this important rank since 2017. Recently, Mongolian wrestlers have been the strongest in the sport. Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. The Japan Sumo Association promoted him to sumo's highest rank after he won the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. Onosato is from Ishikawa prefecture, an area badly affected by a big earthquake and tsunami in 2024. He promised to use his new position to encourage and help the people in his home region. His promotion also creates a competition with Hoshoryu, another yokozuna who was born in Mongolia. They will compete in a tournament in July in Nagoya.
