Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended against many attacks and showed great flexibility on Wednesday. They beat a strong Arsenal team 2-1 to get to the Champions League final and have another chance to win the title they really want.
PSG didn't have the ball as much as usual and looked a bit unsure at first. But they found a way to win 3-1 overall by using fast counter-attacks and good saves from their goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.
PSG reached the final of Europe’s top tournament for only the second time ever. They were second five years ago. They did this in the first season after their star player, Kylian Mbappé, left to join Real Madrid.
Instead of another superstar, someone else took the place left by Mbappé. This was a big change for the club because for over ten years, the owners had spent a lot of money to bring in famous players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi, and Neymar.
With the club's new method, coach Luis Enrique created a strong team playing excellent football.
“From the beginning, I said our goal was to work hard so we could make history – and that is still our goal,” Enrique said. “We want to be the first to win the trophy we have been waiting for for a long time. This project has changed since last year, and I feel happy here as a coach because the president lets me do what I want and helps me build the team we want. We use the players we can get to make a team that gets better every day.”
The French team will try again to win its first Champions League trophy when it plays against Inter Milan in Munich on May 31.
PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi told CBS Sports, "We trust our coach and our players, our skilled, young, and eager players. They fight hard for the team, for the jersey, and that is most important, for the city and the club."
With one fixture remaining, our task is far from complete.
Inter Milan, who have won the European championship three times, beat Barcelona with a total score of 7-6 in a semifinal that many people think was one of the best in the history of the competition.
PSG beat Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Arsenal. Last year, they lost to Borussia Dortmund at this stage, and in the 2020 final, they were beaten by Bayern Munich.
PSG scored the first goal in the 27th minute from a set play after the Arsenal defense kicked a free kick away from the goal. The ball went back to Fabian Ruiz, who hit a great shot into the goal.
Achraf Hakimi scored with a well-placed shot in the 72nd minute, making the score 2-0, before Bukayo Saka scored a goal for Arsenal.
Last week in London, Arsenal had problems at the start of the match, losing 1-0 because they couldn't handle PSG's strong play in the middle of the field.
This time, with midfielder Thomas Partey back, the Gunners had 61 attacks, while PSG had 26.
The visiting team quickly showed they were better when Declan Rice jumped high but didn't head the ball in, and Gabriel Martinelli's shot was stopped by Donnarumma.
Arsenal were very strong on the sides of the field against PSG and almost scored again in the eighth minute. Martin Ødegaard shot hard from outside the box, and Donnarumma had to make another good save.
PSG had to wait for chances to attack quickly from defence, and there were not many.
Finally, after 17 minutes, a chance appeared. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia found some room on the left, moved inside onto his right foot, and hit a very accurate shot that hit the post.
After that, PSG didn't take advantage of William Saliba's bad pass. But Désiré Doué's shot was weak and went straight to Raya.
Soon after 60 minutes, Arsenal had another good chance. Saka took a careful shot towards the top corner, but Donnarumma stretched out and pushed the ball away.
Vitinha missed a penalty after VAR showed Myles Lewis-Skelly touched the ball with his hand. Soon after, PSG scored again when Hakimi shot the ball into the goal from Ousmane Dembélé's pass.
Arsenal continued to attack until the end and reduced the difference in score with a goal from Saka in the 76th minute.
