Japan has named Onosato as its new sumo grand champion, also called yokozuna. He is the first Japanese wrestler to reach this important rank since 2017. In recent years, Mongolian wrestlers have mostly been winning in the sport. Onosato, who is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms, was given the top rank by the Japan Sumo Association after winning the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. Onosato is from Ishikawa prefecture, an area that was badly hit by a big earthquake and tsunami in 2024. He has promised to use his new position to inspire and help the people in his home region. His promotion also creates a rivalry with Hoshoryu, the other current yokozuna, who was born in Mongolia. They have a tournament planned for July in Nagoya.
