The Formula 1 team Alpine has changed its drivers. Franco Colapinto will race instead of Jack Doohan for the next five Grand Prix races.
Alpine said on Wednesday that they were making a change, one day after Oliver Oakes stopped being the team principal. The team also said that Flavio Briatore will stay as an executive advisor and do Oakes's work.
Alpine announced that Colapinto will race with Pierre Gasly starting from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. They will review this decision again before the British Grand Prix in July.
After six races, Alpine is in ninth place in the F1 team rankings. The next race is from May 16 to 18 in Imola.
At Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix, Doohan hit another car at the start of the race and then crashed on the next lap.
Before the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Oakes said that stories in the media about changing the drivers were not true. He stated that the new Australian driver would continue to race.
Doohan, who didn't score any points in his seven GP races and his best finish was 13th, will go back to being the team's reserve driver.
Jack Doohan, whose father Mick Doohan won the motorcycle world championship five times, first raced in Formula 1 at the end of 2024. This year, he drove for Alpine in the first race, the Australian Grand Prix. He took the place of Esteban Ocon, who left Alpine after not having a good year in 2024.
Colapinto became a reserve driver for Alpine in January. Before that, he raced for Williams in 2024 and got five points. He joined Williams in August, taking the place of Logan Sargeant.
