Japan has named Onosato as its new sumo grand champion, also called yokozuna. He is the first Japanese wrestler to get this important title since 2017. In recent years, most winners in sumo have been from Mongolia. Onosato, whose real name is Daiki Nakamura, is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. The Japan Sumo Association gave him sumo's top rank after he won the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. Onosato is from Ishikawa prefecture, an area badly affected by a serious earthquake and tsunami in 2024. He has promised to use his new position to inspire and help the people in his home region. His promotion also sets up a competition with Hoshoryu, the other current yokozuna, who was born in Mongolia. They will compete in a tournament in Nagoya in July.
