Paris Saint-Germain defended against many attacks and showed great flexibility on Wednesday to stop and beat a strong Arsenal team 2-1. This win helped them reach the Champions League final, where they can try again to win the title they really want.
PSG didn't have the ball as much as they usually do, so they looked a bit unsure at the start. But they found a way to win 3-1 overall by using fast counter-attacks and relying on their goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.
PSG got to the final of Europe's best competition for only the second time ever. They were second five years before. They did this in the first season after their main player Kylian Mbappé went to Real Madrid.
Another very famous player did not replace Mbappé when he left. This was a big change for the club, as for over ten years the owners had spent a lot of money to sign famous players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi, and Neymar.
The club's new method helped coach Luis Enrique create a stronger team that played some of the best football in Europe.
“From the beginning, I said our aim was to work hard to be able to make history, and that is still our aim,” Enrique said. “We want to be the first team to win the trophy we have waited for so long. This plan has developed since last year, and I feel happy here as a coach because I have the freedom and help from the president to create the team we want, changing based on the market to build a team that gets better all the time.”
The French team hopes to win its first Champions League title when it plays Inter Milan in Munich on May 31.
PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi told CBS Sports, "We trust our coach and our young, talented players who are eager to succeed. They play with great effort for the team, the city, and the club."
With one match remaining, our task is far from complete.
Inter, a team that had won the European championship three times, beat Barcelona with a total score of 7-6 after playing two games. Many people think this semifinal was one of the best ever in the competition.
PSG beat Aston Villa, Liverpool, and then Arsenal. Last year, they lost to Borussia Dortmund at this stage, and in 2020, Bayern Munich beat them in the final.
PSG scored the first goal after a free kick by Arsenal was sent back to Fabian Ruiz, who kicked it hard into the goal.
Achraf Hakimi netted a clinical finish in the 72nd minute to double the lead, only for Bukayo Saka to halve the deficit for the Gunners.
Arsenal had problems early on last week in London. They could not handle PSG's strong midfield and lost the game 1-0.
This time, with midfielder Thomas Partey back in the team, Arsenal had 61 attacks, while PSG had 26.
The visiting team quickly showed they were in control, and Declan Rice jumped high for a header but did not score, and Donnarumma saved Gabriel Martinelli's shot.
Arsenal attacked strongly down the sides of the field, causing problems for PSG. They almost scored again in the eighth minute when Martin Ødegaard shot from outside the box, but Donnarumma made a good save.
PSG had to wait for chances to attack quickly when their opponents lost the ball, and there were not many.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 17th minute.
PSG didn't use the chance after William Saliba made a bad pass. But Désiré Doué shot weakly, and Raya easily saved it.
Soon after 60 minutes, Arsenal had another good chance when Saka shot the ball towards the top corner, but Donnarumma stretched out and pushed it away.
Then, Vitinha missed a penalty after a video check showed Myles Lewis-Skelly touched the ball with his hand. Soon after, PSG scored their second goal when Hakimi shot the ball into the corner from a pass by Ousmane Dembélé, who had just come into the game.
Arsenal continued to attack until the end and reduced the score difference with a goal from Saka in the 76th minute.
