The Golden State Warriors plan to play without Stephen Curry for at least their next three games against Minnesota.
The Warriors announced that Curry would miss at least a week of games because of the injury he got on Tuesday night. He had to leave the first game early in the second quarter, but they still won 99-88. He scored 13 points in 13 minutes, helping Golden State get a good lead and win at the Timberwolves' home court.
Coach Steve Kerr said, "Every year in the playoffs, you have to change things, like your plan for the game, if a player gets injured, or who is playing. We have changed before, and we are sure we can change again."
Game 2 will be in Minneapolis on Thursday, and then the series goes to San Francisco for Game 3 on Saturday and Game 4 on Monday. Curry might be able to return for Game 5 on May 14, which is followed by three rest days before Game 6 on May 18.
Curry has never had a serious hamstring injury before, so it's unclear how long he will be away. It's also a question if the Warriors can do well enough without the best 3-point shooter in NBA history until he comes back near the end of the series. But they probably shouldn't expect that to happen.
Kerr stated, "We believe our team has the best defense in the league, and this has been shown in recent months."
However, this Golden State team is not as good as their earlier teams. Back then, Curry and Draymond Green were younger, and important players like Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala were key to their success. In 2018, they also had Kevin Durant.
Right now, the Warriors were happy with the team effort from Jimmy Butler, Buddy Hield, and Green in the first game, where Kerr played 12 different players.
If Curry is not playing, Butler will handle the ball a lot, just like he did on Tuesday. The player, who joined the team from Miami three months ago and has improved the team's performance in attack and defence, scored 20 points, got 11 rebounds and made eight assists in the first game. He scored at least 20 points in four out of the five games he played against Houston in the first round.
“Everyone is ready to play. Everyone who joins the game wants to make good moves,” Timberwolves player Mike Conley said. “So you need to be even more focused on the game, who you are playing against, and what they usually do. Because they aren’t only looking for Curry. Of course, Buddy and Jimmy will be more active, but they have players who can score, and they might try to do that together as a team.”
