Serhou Guirassy and Borussia Dortmund achieved something that no one else had managed in 2025 – they defeated Barcelona. However, it was still not enough for them to reach the Champions League semifinals.
Even though Guirassy scored three goals, his team still lost. Dortmund beat Barcelona 3-1, but this was not enough for Guirassy's team to win the whole game.
After losing 4-0 in the first game of the quarterfinal, Dortmund had nothing to lose and attacked Barcelona from the start, which surprised the visitors.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, who played against Dortmund many times in Germany, said the strong support from the home fans meant he thought the second game would be hard, even though his team was leading by four goals.
"I had a feeling that something like this would happen," Flick told the TV channel Amazon Prime. "Today, you have to congratulate Dortmund because they played very well, and congratulations to my team because they reached the semifinals."
Barcelona's forwards, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski, usually score many goals, but they were very quiet in this game.
Coach Niko Kovac said that Guirassy is very important for Dortmund, especially after a game where Guirassy showed how good he is and became the top scorer in the Champions League this season. Kovac added that Guirassy, like all attackers, needs his teammates' help, and he got it in that game.
Dortmund probably lost the quarterfinal in the first game. Also, their captain Emre Can and midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka could not play because they were injured that day.
For a while, Guirassy made it seem like difficult things could happen.
Guirassy had chances but missed them earlier, but he scored easily from a penalty kick in the 11th minute after the Barcelona goalkeeper crashed into Pascal Gross.
Guirassy scored with his head to make it 2-0 after 49 minutes. Then, Dortmund's situation got worse when Ramy Bensebaini scored an own goal from Fermín López's cross. This was very disappointing for Dortmund because Bensebaini had just helped Guirassy score his second goal, which had given Dortmund hope.
Guirassy took advantage of Ronald Araujo's mistake in defence to score his third goal with a strong shot from near the goal in the 76th minute. This made him the best scorer in the Champions League this season with 13 goals.
This result gave Dortmund new hope of making a great comeback in the Champions League, like Barcelona did against Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, but Barcelona kept their lead and won.
Barcelona will play against either Inter Milan or Bayern Munich in the semifinals. This is the first time they have reached the last four of the Champions League since the 2018-19 season. In the other game on Tuesday, PSG also reached the semifinals. They won 5-4 in total against Aston Villa, even though they lost the second game 3-2.
This loss was Barcelona's first in any competition since December 21 and their first in the Champions League since September. It was also only the seventh defeat in Hansi Flick's 50 games as the coach. He had won his previous seven matches against Dortmund when he was coaching Barcelona and Bayern.
Dortmund might not hear the Champions League music in their stadium for some time.
The team that came second in the Champions League last year is now in eighth place in their league, with five matches left to play. They are also six points away from the positions that would allow them to play in the Champions League next season.
