Transgender athlete AB Hernandez won gold medals in the girls' high jump and triple jump at the California high school track and field championship. This caused a lot of discussion and got national attention. Hernandez competed under a new rule from California's sports organization. This rule allowed an extra girl to compete and win medals in events where Hernandez had already qualified. Even with this success, there were protests from people who do not want transgender athletes to play in women's sports. The California Interscholastic Federation started this new rule because of Hernandez's success and to follow California law. This law lets transgender students compete on teams for one sex that match their gender identity. However, some people say that the rule change just makes things more confusing. This discussion is happening at the same time as a recent survey. This survey shows that about 7 out of 10 adults in the US think transgender female athletes should not be allowed to compete in girls' and women's sports at any level.
