Team owner John Fisher stood in front of a large group on Monday morning. Behind him were piles of dirt, construction vehicles, and the exact spot where home plate will be at the new Athletics ballpark. He had one message: "We are Vegas' team."
Many people, including MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, local government officials, former Athletics stars like Rollie Fingers and Dave Stewart, and young baseball players, watched the team celebrate the start of building their new stadium. This stadium will cost $1.75 billion, hold 33,000 people, and is expected to be ready for the 2028 season.
Nevada and Clark County have approved up to $380 million in public funds for the project.
Team president Marc Badain said he was sure it would be finished by 2028, and the local workers were ready and keen to start.
It's great to see the positive impact of today. We can also think about what the next three years will mean for the community, the building project, new jobs, and everything else you'll see as this building starts to be built, possibly even tonight.
Badain had a similar experience when he worked in the same role for the NFL's Raiders. He was very important in the team's move from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020, and also in getting the $2 billion Allegiant Stadium approved and built.
Before Allegiant Stadium was finished, the Raiders stayed in Oakland for three seasons, sharing a stadium with the A's. The Raiders kept a strong connection to the Bay Area, even though they were going to leave. However, A's fans were very angry about their team's upcoming move and how it was handled.
This situation made it impossible for the team to stay in Oakland, so they played their last season in the old stadium last year. The A's will play for at least three years in a smaller stadium in West Sacramento, California, which is about an hour away, while they wait to move to Las Vegas.
Fisher explained that as a local team, they want to attract young fans, because if children become interested, their parents will also get involved. He added that it takes a lot of time and effort to create a winning team.
We want to keep improving what we have, and building a team is like building anything else. Sometimes it takes longer than you expect. It's like building a stadium. We believe we have the right parts to be very successful.
Bally's will build the stadium on nine acres of their 35-acre property, which is at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. The Tropicana hotel buildings were taken down in October to make room for the new ballpark.
The A's baseball team is trying to use their temporary home well, while also getting ready for their future. Each player has a patch of Sacramento's Tower Bridge on one sleeve and a Las Vegas logo on the other. This is part of a three-year agreement with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
In December, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority approved the lease, an agreement for the team to stay, and development plans. These were the last important steps for the Athletics baseball team to become Las Vegas's team.
Artist's pictures show a stadium with five overlapping parts that look very similar to Australia's famous Sydney Opera House. A large glass window behind the outfield makes it feel like you are outside, with views of the Las Vegas Strip. Instead of one main cooling system, air conditioning will be sent through the seats.
This will be MLB's smallest stadium. However, Tropicana Field, where the Tampa Bay Rays usually play, can hold 25,000 people when its top sections are closed. Normally, it has almost 40,000 seats.
Like the A's, the Rays are playing in a smaller stadium this season because Hurricane Milton damaged their main stadium. The team's long-term home is not known, and new owners might take control of the club soon.
Cleveland plays at Progressive Field, which can now hold 34,830 people. This is fewer seats than when the park opened in 1994, when it had 43,345 seats.
The Oakland A's are expected to be the fourth big professional sports team in Las Vegas, alongside the Raiders, Golden Knights (NHL), and Aces (WNBA).
Manfred stated that factors like population trends, the popularity of other sports, and the high number of tourists make Las Vegas a great place for their business. He added that he was sure the team would do well there.
